World Environment Day takes place on 5 June 2021. This United Nations commemorative day was established in 1974 to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment. To celebrate World Environment Day, we’re highlighting a few brands that are doing their bit to address environmental issues. We raise a glass to these alcoholic beverage companies for using innovative ways to be kinder to the planet.

Heineken brews a better world

Dutch multinational brewing company Heineken has recently made significant strides towards becoming more environmentally friendly. As part of its 2030 Brew a Better World programme, it has committed to achieving carbon neutrality in production by 2030 and its entire value chain by 2040. It also aims to have zero-waste-to-landfill globally by 2025 and positively impact all water-stressed areas by 2030. You can find out more about Heineken’s commendable commitment to the environment, social, sustainable and responsible consumption on a path to a net zero, fairer and healthier world, here.

“Our Brew a Better World vision for 2030 raises the bar and enables faster progress towards a net zero, fairer and healthier world. Our new commitments are woven into the fabric of our balanced growth strategy, EverGreen, putting sustainability and responsibility front and centre as we write our next chapter,” says Dolf van den Brink, Heineken CEO and chairperson of its executive board.

Bombay Sapphire stirs creativity

Premium UK gin company Bombay Sapphire is on track to becoming sustainably sourced this year. It announced that all 10 of its botanical ingredients are expected to be certified sustainable. Ivano Tonutti, Bombay Sapphire’s master of botanicals, will also be awarded the For Life certification by Ecocert SA, the world’s leading specialist in the certificate of sustainable practices. This is in recognition of his commitment to work with responsible suppliers who ensure a sustainable future for farmers, their communities and the environment. Corona is boxing clever

Corona Extra is a pale Mexican lager that’s becoming greener by introducing new packaging using surplus barley straw. The new circular form of packaging for six-packs leverages technology that was developed by AB InBev’s Global Innovation and Technology Center. This innovative idea uses surplus from the barley used to make beer to form a sustainable package solution.

Barley straw was previously disposed of during the production process. It will now be combined with 100% recycled wood fibres to create a paper board that is used to make packaging that’s as solid as its predecessor but is better for the planet. Find out more about it here
